Experimental stem cell treatment arrests acute lung injury in mice, study shows (2/7/2010)

Experimental stem cell treatment arrests acute lung injury in mice, study showsStem cell researchers exploring a new approach for the care of respiratory diseases report that an experimental treatment involving transplantable lung cells was associated with improved outcomes in tests on mice with acute lung injury. The lung cells were derived from human embryonic stem cells. Findings by investigators at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston are scheduled to appear in the March issue of Molecular Therapy. ...> Full Article

Physician-scientist proves stem cells heal lungs of newborn animals (11/29/2009)

An international team led by Dr. Bernard Thébaud, Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Clinical Scholar, demonstrates that stem cells protect and repair the lungs of newborn rats. The study finds that rats treated with stem cells ran twice as far, and had better survival rates. Currently, there is no treatment for the lungs of babies born too early. Scientists predict these results will lead to a new treatment for these babies within three years. ...> Full Article

Lung tissue generated from human embryonic stem cells (11/6/2009)

Scientists in Belgium have successfully differentiated human embryonic stem cells (hESC) into major cell types of lung epithelial tissue using a convenient air-liquid interface. The technique, published in BioMed Central's open access journal Respiratory Research, could provide an alternative to lung transplants for patients with lung injury due to chronic pulmonary disease and inherited genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis. ...> Full Article

Stem cell therapy may offer hope for acute lung injury (11/2/2009)

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine have shown that adult stem cells from bone marrow can prevent acute lung injury in a mouse model of the disease. ...> Full Article

Gene therapy repairs injured human donor lungs for the first time (10/30/2009)

Gene therapy repairs injured human donor lungs for the first timeFor the first time, scientists in the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine, University Health Network have successfully used gene therapy to repair injured human donor lungs, making them potentially suitable for transplantation into patients. This technique could significantly expand the number of donor lungs by using organs that are currently discarded, and improve outcomes after transplantation. It is estimated that the number of donor organs available for lung transplants could easily be doubled with this technique. ...> Full Article

Scientists grow lung epithelial cells for transplants (3/5/2007)

Molecular scientists at the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases (IMM) – which is part of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston – have developed a new procedure for the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells, with which they have created the first transplantable source of lung epithelial cells. ...> Full Article
