UK Scientists to grow heart arteries (1/8/2007)
Andrew Owens of Durham University and James Cook University Hospital on Teesside have received a £84,000 grant from Heart Research UK to try and "grow" test tube arteries for use in heart bypass operations.
The 2 year study will take stem cells from the skin and attempt to stimulate them to transform themselves into the cells found in a normal artery.
Stem cells have been used to create several tissues and organs with the eventual hope of using them as replacements for defective or damaged tissues. This new research hopes to grow bypass vessels specifically for a patient using their own cells, which would benefit the patient much more than the current graft materials used.
Previously scientists in Switzerland grew human heart valves using stem cells.
