Scientists clone pet dog (8/3/2005)
Researchers at Seoul National University have developed the first dog clones. One of the puppies died
shortly after birth, but another Afghan hound is health after 16 weeks.
Because dogs have a similar anatomy and physiology as humans, and because they have lived as companions with humans
for such a long time, researchers believe that dogs may hold several keys to understanding human diseases.
The cloned puppy, named Snuppy, was created from the ear cell and inserted into an empty egg. The egg was
they stimilated into dividing into an embryo.
Dogs have been very difficult to clone. The South Korean team only had three successful pregnancies from over 1,000
embryos transfered into 123 host mothers. Of these 1 miscarried and 1 died shortly after birth, leaving Snuppy the only
surviving test subject.
