Clone researcher, professor Ian Wilmut and the Kings College London scientists have been granted licence to clone human embyos for studying motor neurone disease. Professor Wilmut is responsible for creating the first animal clone "Dolly".

Therapeutic cloning for research has been legal in the UK since 2001, though this is only the second time the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority has given permission to perform this type of research.

Motor Nueron Disease (MND) is caused by the death of cells called motor neurons that control movement in the spinal cord and brain. It affects approximately 5,000 people in the UK, with 50% dying within 14 month of diagnosis.

The purpose of the study is to determine what causes the motor neurons to die.
