Creating Stem Cells from testes (4/3/2006)
US Researchers at PrimeGen Biotech have developed a method of transforming germ cells
(found in the testes and ovaries) into stem cells in humans. Previously this method had only been performed on mice
germ cells by Gerd Hasenfuss of Georg-August-University in Goettingen, Germany.
This breakthrough could have wide
ranging implications for cloning in general as it gives scientists one more avenue for harvesting and manipulating stem
cells. Stem cells can be bioengineered to become several different types of tissues.
This technique could be developed further to create fully functioning organs.
