Conference to Highlight Rochester Stem Cell Research (5/14/2008)
A half-day symposium showcasing research in the field of stem cell biology at the University of Rochester will be held on May 23. The symposium, titled "Frontiers in Stem Cell Medicine," is being sponsored by the University's Clinical and Translational Science Institute and the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Institute.
The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is home to several leading stem cell research programs. There are approximately 40 scientists at URMC that work with stem cells in some form or another and their labs employ more than 230 people and are supported with more than $78 million in research funds.
URMC researchers are at the forefront of developing the tools needed to pinpoint stem cells, control their development, and customize their use for several diseases. Areas of particular strength include neuromedicine, cancer, and bone and tissue repair. Much of the stem cell work underway in Rochester has the potential to move to clinical trials in a matter of years, not decades, and the Medical Center is poised to make significant strategic investments in this field which is considered to be one of the University's future scientific cornerstones.
Speakers at the symposium include: biomedical geneticist Mark Noble, Ph.D., director of the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Institute; neurologist Steven Goldman, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Division of Cell and Gene Therapy; cancer researcher Craig Jordan, Ph.D., director of Translational Research for Hematologic Malignancies at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center; Edward Puzas, Ph.D., with the Department of Orthopaedics, and Rocky Tuan, Ph.D., chief of the Cartilage Biology and Orthopaedics Branch of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.
The symposium, which includes a poster session featuring the work of members of the University's stem cell research community, will be held on Friday, May 23 from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Class of '62 Auditorium.
